"Your Legacy!"
One of my favorite authors is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an American classic. One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Tom and Huck had been missing for a while. Everyone assumed that they had drowned in the river. So there is a funeral, and Tom and Huck, still alive and well, watch from a vantage point in the church as the townsfolk, the same who were constantly complaining and even persecuting the boys, now were weeping and wailing their praises. But wait! There is a creak of the old church door. And suddenly Tom and Huck, alive and well, walk down the aisle. It's a miracle! And the minister leads everyone in a hymn of praise. The once ridiculed and even despised boys, are showered with hugs, kisses, and positive attention.
Have you ever wondered what folks would say about you at your funeral? What would their message be? Better yet, what is your message, your legacy? This week Patti and I attended a visitation for a dear friend, George "David" Thompson, who recently succumbed to cancer. He peacefully passed away in his sleep at home. When we arrived at Grassland Heights Baptist Church for the visitation, it was amazing the folks were there. I can honestly say I have never seen so many cars at the church. There were no parking places, so cars had to park all over the grass - which is where we ended up parking. And the receiving line snaked around hallway after hallway. It was like going through a maze. In the two hours of visitation, which turned into three, there were over 1000 folks who came and paid their respects.
Finally, after being in line for over an hour, Patti and me had our turn to love on and thank the family. There were smiles, laughter, and joy - even in this time of loss and grief. The reason: David Thompson, only 68, lived a life that made a difference. His faith was strong and unwavering. His love for God, Family, Friends, and even Strangers was seen not just in words, but even stronger in deeds. He was always smiling and had a kind word whenever he saw you. His sermon was definitely seen and not just heard. His legacy will live on for generations to come. And the main reason for his joy is that David had no fear of death. He knew it was just a part of life. And now he is really living large and Celebrating Big - Real Big!
In Matthew 25, Jesus shares the parable of the sheep and the goats. And the only difference between the two is what they did or did not do in showing love and compassion to others. Proverbs 10:7 says, "A good and honest life is a blessed memorial; a wicked life leaves a rotten stench." (The Message). So again, what will be your legacy? Will it stink? Or will it be filled with the sweet fragrance of a life well lived. And when you stand before the Master, will He say "Well done my good and faithful servant!"
So like Tom and Huck, what will be said about you at your funeral? Your Legacy!
Last week we began our series on Dysfunction to Dynasty. We are looking at lessons learned from the life of Joseph. We took a quick, but detailed look at Joseph's ancestry. Isn't it great that God uses us despite our brokenness and flaws! This Sunday we will look at Dysfunction to Dynasty - The Pit! I hope you will join us.
By the way, if you are reading this on Friday evening or early Saturday morning, the Graceworks Mobile Food Pantry is this Saturday morning at the Fairview Middle School. If you can help out and volunteer then please be at the School by 7 am. I know they will appreciate the help.
Again, I look forward to seeing you soon. And Always Remember...
You ARE Loved!
