"Christlike"

During several summers, and even for short term international missions, Patti and I had the privilege of working with a wonderful camp called "Centrifuge".  The staff was filled with incredible people from all around the country.  Many were like me in Seminary, or were professionals, such as teachers, who had the summer off.  One hot, humid, south Alabama evening in late May, our staff has just arrived.  We gathered around getting to know each other.  It was a fun time breaking the ice, learning about one another, and beginning to build strong life changing and life lasting relationships.  I asked the question, "Who is the most Christ-like person that you know."  It was interesting hearing the different answers and why.  When it was Patti's turn, she said I would have to say Lonnie's Dad.

What!  MY DAD!

Honestly, I love my Dad, but I was not expecting that.   And then she began to share that she had worked the prior summer as a summer Intern/missionary with my Dad at their Church.  She witnessed and experienced first hand his ministry.  Patti mentioned that he was kind, compassionate, obviously loved the Lord and wanted others to know and love Him too.  He was talented, but humble.  He could work with everyone - even the challenging folks.  And she never saw him get angry, rattled, or show any negativity towards anyone.  Even when they may have been less than kind to him.   What a compliment from a brand new daughter-in-law - or anyone for that matter.  For the first time I began to see my Dad in a different, and special way.  I knew he was far from perfect.  But Patti had nailed her description of Him.  Suddenly, I felt very honored to be my Father's Son.  And also challenged to be more of a reflection of Him and more importantly our Heavenly Father.

I share this intimate moment with you because Patti, myself, and many of our family and friends have the privilege of Celebrating Dad's 90th birthday!  What an honor.  What an accomplishment.  What a legacy.  What a job well done!  And we are going to CELEBRATE and CELEBRATE BIG!!  REAL BIG!!!  But, the best part of this story - I totally agree with my wife!

This week Matt Blount had an incredible experience in Uganda.  We are so glad that he had a safe trip.  He will be sharing with us soon about his experiences in Uganda.  We want to know what God is doing and how we can continue to be a part of this exciting ministry.  (I do know that they had a four hour worship service with more than one sermon....)

We also rejoice in Lori Leachman's successful surgery and the great reports she received.  She appears to be clear and cancer free!  Praise God!  What a miracle!    Please keep Lori in your prayers as she recovers and heals.  Lori and Bill have mentioned on multiple occasions how much they continue to appreciate the love, support, prayers, and encouragement from their Family at Fernvale.

Welcome Home Steve!  Steve has been in Florida spending time with friends and family..  We hope he had an enjoyable and restful time.  His FCC family is glad to have him home.  On Saturday, September 28, will be our Annual Celebration of Music In the Vale.  Steve is busy gathering the talent and music for MIV.  By the way, we need everyone's help to make this special event  - an expression of thanks to our community - the best it can be.  There is a place for everyone:  donations, cooks, desserts, food, drink, greeting, set up, clean up, music, and more.  It's going to be awesome

On Wednesday nights, Michael Card is leading a study on the oldest book of the Bible, Job.  This is a great study on the life of one of the true Old Testament heroes who gives us all hope - even in the most difficult situations.  This study is at 6:30 in the Worship Center.  All are invited.

And Patti Morena, is participating in the "Bike to Jack and Back" Fundraiser for MS.  This awesome event is a two day bike ride, of 45 and 75 miles.  It will culminate in Lynchburg, the home of Jack Daniels.  Patti and I know several who have or had MS, and are personally supporting and thanking Patti for allowing us to do so.  Just another example of how our FCC Family continues to be difference makers making a positive impact in our world!  Another example of significant "salt of the earth" action.

This Sunday we have the privilege to hear the Word shared by Ric Escobar.  Ric is going to be speaking about the "Scattered Church".  I love when Ric speaks.  He is always on target, challenges us, but also encourages.  We are so blessed to have Ric as part of our FCC family.

As I close this edition of "Lonnie's Lines" I ask you..."Who is the most Christ-like person that you know?"  (Would someone say your name if asked that question?)

Jesus tells us in John 13:15 "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”(ESV)
